Halfitalism is a new business model that embraces the strengths of capitalism while addressing some of its weaknesses.
What is Halfitalism?
Businesses typically exist in order to generate profits that are provided to shareholders. The Halfitalism business model, while recognizing that need for shareholder earnings, also values the enormous benefit of investing real money in local communities. The rationale for this is simple: these investments strengthen the community and local environment, upon which all of us depend. For the AQ retail store in Courtenay, BC, that means that 50% of our annual net profit is directly invested in our local community and environment - either through investments in green infrastructure, employee profit sharing, or donations to 3rd party not-for-profits.
How are Halfitalist business different from regular businesses?
We believe that we need to reform capitalism, not abandon it. Today, businesses typically generate profits that are provided to shareholders. The Halfitalism business model, while recognizing the need for shareholder earnings, also values the great benefit that can be achieved by businesses investing real money in their local community. The rationale for this is simple: these investments can strengthen the community and local environment, upon which all of us depend.
HOW WE'RE INVESTING IN OUR COMMUNITY
We have partnered with the Cumberland Community Forest Society (CCFS) because we value land acquisition strategies aimed at preserving the ecological integrity of the forest and watershed. This is perhaps the best way we can contribute directly to carbon sequestration in our community.
We have also partnered with You Are Not Alone (YANA) because they provide accommodation and funding to Comox Valley families who need to travel outside the community for serious medical treatments for children. These children and families are in many cases experiencing tremendous hardship, and we want to support members of our community in times of such need.
